Panakkattodil Devi Temple

Panakkattodil Devi Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located in Chavara Thekkumbhagom village, Kollam district, Kerala. The primary deity worshipped here is Goddess Durga, with Kali also holding equal importance.

The temple complex includes shrines for Lord Ganapathy, Dharma Sastha, Brahma Rakshas, and Nagadevar.

Mythological Significance & History

The origins of the temple lack documented historical records, but it is believed to be over 1,000 years old.
According to legend, a Brahmin youth, arriving in Chavara Thekkumbhagom, joined hands with Koyippurathu Nambeesan Aasari, a skilled carpenter. Together, they built the temple’s base structure and consecrated Bhadrakali. The temple later expanded under the Valayaappallil family, possibly overseen by the Manjippuzha Thamburan. It came under Travancore government administration in 1946 (Kollavarsham 1121).

Significance of the Temple

The temple is celebrated for the Thalappoli ceremony held during Meda Bharani and a grand annual festival in April–May (Malayalam month Medam). These festivals attract devotees from far and wide.
The Panakkattodil Pooram is a vibrant celebration featuring elephant processions, traditional music (Melam), tantric rituals, homams, abhishekams, and cultural performances such as Kalaripayattu. The festival begins with kodiyettam (flag hoisting) and concludes with the arattu (holy bath procession) and Thiruvabharanam procession.

Architecture of the Temple

Designed in the traditional Kerala architectural style, the temple features:

Sloping tiled roofs, wooden craftsmanship, and stone elements typical of the region’s heritage temple architecture.

Although specific architectural details are limited in documentation, the temple’s design reflects Kerala’s time-honored temple aesthetics.

How to Reach to Temple

By Air: The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, approx. 92 km away.

By Train: Closest major railway station is Kollam Junction (~18 km), with Karunagappally Station being another option (~21 km).

By Road: Chavara Thekkumbhagom connects via local roads to NH‑66 at multiple junctions. KSRTC and private buses run from Kollam and Karunagappally to the temple complex. A bus stop is located within the temple premises.

By Water: Nearby jetties like Pallikkodi support boat services from Kollam to other regions.
