Oorpazhachi Kavu Temple

Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu is a revered temple located in Edakkad, approximately 12 km from Kannur, Kerala. It’s uniquely dedicated to three deities:

“ऊरपाझाची कावु की पावन धरा पर देवी स्वयं निवास करती हैं — यहाँ हर प्रार्थना सीधे माँ के हृदय तक पहुँचती है।”

― Oorpazhachi Kavu Temple

Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar, and Vettakkorumakan (Kiratha Sunu) — enshrined within Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shakthiya sanctums, all co-existing within a single temple complex

Mythological Significance & History

In the 1790s, during invasions by Tippu Sultan, the temple’s authorities fled with the idols and valuables, seeking refuge in the Akkaraveettil Tharavad in Thalassery. The deities were re-consecrated only after the invaders withdrew. A reconstruction and expansion phase followed between 1845 and 1899.

Significance of the Temple

The temple symbolizes religious harmony, incorporating Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shakthiya traditions.
Bhagavathy (Mother Goddess): A legend recounts how Kali became Gauri after penance in a forest, granted her fair complexion by Brahma.
Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar: Seen as a Vaishnava manifestation of Vishnu in disguise, engaged in moral duel, recognized as Daivathar.
Vettakkorumakan: Son of Shiva, humbled by Vishnu and armed with a dagger (Churika), later worshipped here.
Thondachan: A deified ancestor and temple custodian — represented with a bow and churika. His shrine at the upper citadel (Mele Kottam) hosts daily oracle dances: Vellattom (Vaishnava) and Kaliyattom (Shaiva).
Healing Pond: Wisely believed to have healing powers from “japicha mannu” (blessed sand) thrown by sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar.
Folklore also connects the temple to Meloor Dayarappan, a valorous deified warrior, whose legend is preserved in local Theyyam traditions and folklore literature. His companions and legends are commemorated through sacred communal narratives.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in traditional Kerala temple architectural style, featuring multiple shrines (Nalambalam), a healing pond, and an upper citadel housing Thondachan’s sanctuary

Daily rituals include Abhishekam, Usha Pooja, Uchcha Pooja, Sankunatham, Deeparadhana, Athaazha Pooja across all three shrines.

Major festivals:

Mandala Vilakku: a 41-day festival from mid-November to end-December, featuring traditional rituals, lamps, and oracle dances
