Nandikeshwari Temple

Nandikeshwari Temple, also called Nandikeshwari Tala or Nandipur Shakti Peeth, is a revered shrine in Sainthia, Birbhum district, West Bengal.

ॐ नन्दिकेशाय नमः। — “हे नन्दिकेश्वर, आपका नमस्कार।”

― Nandikeshwari Temple

It is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas, believed to mark where Sati’s necklace (nanda) fell as Lord Vishnu dismembered her body. The temple stands near the serene banks of the Mayurakshi River.

Mythological Significance & History

Constructed in 1913 (Bengali year 1320), the current temple honors an ancient shrine site.
Instead of a conventional idol, the Goddess is enshrined as a tortoise-shaped black stone, adorned with three golden eyes, and topped with a silver crown. It is now largely covered in vermillion (sindoor), symbolizing divine presence.
Lord Shiva is represented here as Nandikeshwar or Bhairava, complementing the Goddess’s Shakti form.

Significance of the Temple

As a Shakti Peeth, the temple draws devotees seeking salvation, prosperity, relief from ailments, knowledge, and fulfillment of wishes.
Within the complex are multiple shrines dedicated to various deities—Ram–Sita, Nabadurga, Saraswati, Lakshmi-Ganesha, Vishnu-Lakshmi, Radha-Govinda, Hanuman, Bhairav, and more
A sacred banyan tree within the temple compound provides a ritual space where devotees tie red or yellow threads, praying for their desires to be granted.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple rests on an elevated platform and features fairly simple architecture, enhanced by paintings of various gods and goddesses on its walls.

Decorated with numerous smaller shrines and peaceful spaces under shade-giving trees, it offers both sacred ambience and artistic detailing
