Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple is a sacred Shakti Peeth, located on the Naina Dhar hill in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh, at an elevation of around 1,177–1,219 m above sea level.

“जो सच्चे मन से नैना देवी को पुकारता है, माँ उसके जीवन की हर अंधेरी राह को रौशन कर देती हैं।”

― Naina Devi Temple

It offers breathtaking views of the Gobind Sagar Lake and Bhakra Dam

History of the Temple

According to legend, it is where the eyes of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu dismembered her body to calm Shiva’s Tandava dance—making it one of the revered 51 Shakti Peeths

A shepherd boy named Naina is said to have discovered a miraculous stone where a cow poured milk daily. When he reported it to Raja Bir Chand, a temple was built on that spot

The temple is also associated with the defeat of Mahishasur, hence sometimes referred to as Mahishapeeth

Architecture of the Temple

Set atop a triangular hill, the temple features traditional Himachali architectural style with marble structures, carved facades, and open courtyards.

The main sanctum houses the idol of Goddess Naina Devi. Smaller shrines for deities like Ganesha and Hanuman are located within the courtyard

A ropeway (cable car) connects the base to the temple top—offering a scenic and easier ascent through the hills

Religious Significance

As a Shakti Peeth, the temple represents divine feminine energy and is believed to grant spiritual insight, fulfillment of wishes, and protection from negative forces

It holds deep significance during Navratri, Shravan Ashtami, and Chaitra fairs, drawing devotees from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and beyond
