Mahavirji Temple

Mahavirji Temple

Shri Mahaveer Ji Temple, located in Mahaveerji town (formerly Chandanpur) in Karauli district, Rajasthan, is a revered Digambara Jain Atishaya Kshetra dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara.

“जहाँ शांति बोलती है और अहिंसा जीती है – वहीं है महावीरजी धाम।”

― Mahavirji Temple

It is visited by millions of Jain and Hindu devotees each year.

Mythological Significance & History

Built in the 17th century by Jain merchant Shri Amar Chand Bilala, the temple was constructed after the sacred idol of Mahavira was discovered buried on a hillock when a cow began pouring milk on it daily..

Attempts to move the idol failed until Krapa Ram, the dairy farmer, pushed the chariot—its movement believed to be divine will. A shrine marking the footprint remains at the discovery spot..

Significance of the Temple

Recognized as a miraculous Tirth Kshetra, it’s considered one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for Digambara Jains.

Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, is celebrated with great devotion and draws over a lakh pilgrims for the annual five-day fair and Rath Yatra

Architecture of the Temple

Built in Nagara-style architecture, the temple blends exquisite white marble and red sandstone, featuring high pinnacles and a vast fortified enclosure.

A 52‑ft Manastambha (pillar of pride) topped with four Tirthankara icons greets devotees at the entrance.

Inside the Garbhagriha, the main idol sits in Padmasana posture, flanked by statues of Tirthankaras like Pushpadant and Adinath. Walls are adorned with 16 mythological carvings and golden murals.

The temple complex includes a katla (courtyard of dharamshalas), lodging and dining facilities for pilgrims.
