Mythological Significance & History

The Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai was built in 1831 by a Hindu merchant named Dhakji Dadaji, who was inspired by a divine dream where Goddess Mahalaxmi instructed him to build a temple. During the construction of the nearby British-era Hornby Vellard project, engineers faced continuous problems until idols of Goddess Mahalaxmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati were found. The construction succeeded after installing the idols, leading to the foundation of this temple.
