Madan Mohan Temple

Madan Mohan Temple

The Madan Mohan Temple is a revered Hindu sanctuary located in Karauli, Rajasthan, perched near the banks of the Bhadravati River, a tributary of the Banas River in the Aravalli hills.

“श्री मदन मोहन – जिनके नाम से ही प्रेम बरसता है और आत्मा शांत हो जाती है।”

― Madan Mohan Temple

It is a key pilgrimage site in the Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition and is known as one of the Char Dham of Karauli district — alongside Kaila Devi, Mehandipur Balaji, and Shri Mahavirji Temples

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, King Gopal Singh of Karauli received divine guidance in a dream after winning a battle at Daultabad. Lord Krishna instructed him to bring his idol, Madan Mohan, from Amer (Jaipur) to Karauli and install it there.

Following this vision, the King relocated the idol and constructed the temple to house it.

Earlier, to protect the original Madan Mohan image during Mughal invasions, two idols were brought from Vrindavan—one installed in Karauli and another in Jaipur.

Significance of the Temple

The temple houses life-sized idols of Lord Krishna, Radha, and Lalita Sakhi. The Krishna idol, approximately 3 ft tall, and the Radha idol, around 2 ft, are crafted from ashtadhatu (eight-metal alloy) and are considered highly sacred and ancient

Devotees participate in a unique ritual known as Jugal Prasad, where one laddu and one kachauri are offered daily by a single devotee—some devotees wait years for their turn in the queue

Architecture of the Temple

Constructed in authentic Rajasthani architectural style, using reddish‑pink Karauli stone and lime mortar, the temple stands near the Karauli Fort complex.

Features include a spacious jagmohan (assembly hall), a wide open courtyard, and a circular parikrama (circumambulatory path) around the garbhagriha (sanctum)

Adjacent to the main shrine are smaller shrines dedicated to neighboring deities; the temple is known for its towering presence, especially during moonlit nights when its stone architecture appears even more dramatic
