Kopineshwar Mandir, Thane

Kopineshwar Mandir

Kopineshwar Mandir, located on Station Road near Masunda Lake in Thane (Mumbai), is one of the city’s oldest and most venerated temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, regarded as the patron deity of Thane

“ठाणे की पवित्र भूमि पर बसे कोपिनेश्वर महादेव, जिनकी कृपा से हर संकट टल जाता है।”

― Kopineshwar Mandir

The temple is believed to be over 800 years old, with its origins dating back to the Silhara dynasty.

Mythological Significance & History

Constructed during the reign of the Shilahara dynasty (810–1240 AD), who were ardent followers of Lord Shiva
Local lore says the Shiva linga is swayambhu and emerged from Masunda Lake, also known as Talao Pali.
The present structure was reconstructed by Sarsubhedar Ramaji Mahadeo Bivalkar around 1760 AD after Maratha reconquest, and further renovated by the local Hindu community in 1879 (with additional restorations later).

Significance of the Temple

The temple’s massive Shiva lingam—about 5 feet tall and broad—is a crowning feature, believed to grow each year—a myth that enhances its spiritual allure
Surrounding the main shrine are small shrines dedicated to various deities like Rama, Brahma, Maruti, Kalika Devi, Shitala Devi, Uttareshwar, and Gayatri Devi.
Despite its location in a busy market area, the temple retains a tranquil ambiance that draws both devotees and local worshippers alike.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in masonry and Hemadpanthi style, blending Shilahara sensibilities with Maratha-era reconstruction.

The entrance is guarded by a prominent Nandi bull statue, symbolizing Shiva’s divine mount

The temple has two main entrances: one facing Masunda Lake and another adjoining the Jambli Naka market on Station Road
