Kodandaramaswami Temple

Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama, along with his consort Sita and his brother Lakshmana.

“हे अविनाशी भगवान, जिनके और भी नाम हैं – केशव, राम, नारायण, दामोदर, वासुदेव, हरि, श्रीधर, माधव, गोपिकावल्लभ, जानकीनायक, रामचंद्र—मैं आपके नाम का निरन्तर सुमिरण करता रहूँ।”

― Kodandaramaswami Temple

Located in the heart of Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, the temple is under the administration of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and attracts thousands of devotees year-round.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 10th century CE by the Chola dynasty.
Later, it was expanded and renovated by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire, especially during the reign of Krishnadevaraya.
According to local legends, Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana and returning from Lanka, stayed briefly at this location on his way back to Ayodhya.
It is also believed that Jambavantha installed the deities of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana here.

Significance of the Temple

The unique feature of this temple is the positioning of the deities: Sita is placed to the right of Rama, which is uncommon in traditional temple architecture. This placement resembles their post-wedding position, symbolizing auspicious marital harmony.
Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for family harmony, marriage, and peace.
Important festivals like Sri Rama Navami, Brahmotsavam, and Teppotsavam (Float Festival) are celebrated with grandeur.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in Dravidian style, the temple features a large gopuram (entrance tower), intricately carved mandapams (halls), and a sanctum sanctorum housing the main deities.

The Vijayanagara influence is visible in the architectural elements such as the stone carvings and pillared halls.

A sacred tank called Sri Ramachandra Pushkarini is located near the temple, used for rituals and the Float Festival.
