Mythological Significance & History

Constructed in the 12th century CE (circa 1143–1198) by Kakatiya King Prataparudra II, the temple’s origin is linked to a mystical experience: while hunting, the king heard chanting of Lord Rama’s name emanating from a seated stone idol of Hanuman. That night, Hanuman appeared in his dream urging him to build a temple there.
A powerful legend recounts how Aurangzeb’s forces could not enter the temple premises, and when the emperor himself tried, he heard a divine voice saying, “Mandir todna hai raja, to karo man ghat”—meaning “If you wish to break this temple, first strengthen your heart.” This miraculous protection gave the area its name: Karmanghat.
