Karimpuzha Sree Ramaswamy Temple

The Karimpuzha Sree Ramaswamy Temple, located on the banks of the Karimpuzha River in Palakkad district, Kerala, is one of the most sacred temples dedicated to Lord Rama in South India.

Often referred to as “Dakshina Ayodhya” (Ayodhya of the South), this temple holds great spiritual, cultural, and historical significance.

Mythological Significance & History

Era of Origin: The temple dates back to several centuries and was patronized by the Zamorin rulers of Calicut. The Eralpad, the designated heir to the Zamorin, resided nearby and considered this temple his family deity.
Mythological Belief: According to legend, Lord Rama renounced his life here, at the Karimpuzha River, which is considered the southern counterpart of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya. It is also believed that Hanuman was present during this divine moment, and thus, his idol is consecrated alongside Lord Rama.

Significance of the Temple

Spiritual Importance: This is one of the few temples where Lord Rama is worshipped in his renunciate form, symbolizing his return to the divine realm.
Cultural Hub: It was a central spiritual and cultural center during the time of the Zamorins.
Festivals: The annual festival during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March) is widely celebrated with rituals like Pallivetta (sacred hunt) and Arattu (holy bath).

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in traditional Kerala-style architecture.

The Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) is circular, which is common in Kerala’s ancient temples.

The temple is situated beside a river, enhancing its serene and spiritual atmosphere.

By Road: The temple is around 2 km from Sreekrishnapuram and is easily accessible via local buses and taxis from Palakkad and Ottapalam.

By Train: Nearest major railway station is Palakkad Junction, approximately 35 km away.
