Kadiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple

The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, located in Kadiri town, Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple is unique because it houses the self-manifested (Swayambhu) idol of Lord Narasimha inside a cave.

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, after slaying the demon king Hiranyakashipu, Lord Narasimha appeared here to bless devotees. The place is called “Kadiri”, derived from Khadrivanam (meaning forest of Khadira trees), where the Lord is believed to have manifested.
The temple is believed to have been built during the Vijayanagara dynasty in the 15th century and has since been renovated and expanded by various kings and devotees. Ancient inscriptions in the temple speak of its importance as a spiritual and cultural center.

Significance of the Temple

One of the rare temples where the deity is seen in multiple forms: Ugra Narasimha, Yoga Narasimha, and Lakshmi Narasimha.
Devotees believe that worshipping here removes fear, evil forces, and hardships, while also granting health, wealth, and spiritual peace.
The temple is also famous for “Abhishekam with butter”, where large quantities of butter are offered to the Lord, symbolizing the cooling of His Ugra (angry) form.
The temple holds a great significance during Narasimha Jayanti and Rathotsavam (Chariot Festival).
