The temple dates back to the 11th century, built by Chola king Raja Vikrama Deva, who discovered the idol following a divine dream. He was guided to excavate where a chariot nail fell and installed a shrine at that very spot.

Mythological Significance & History

Located in Ryali, East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, this rare temple houses a monolithic Salagrama Ekashila statue (approx. 5 ft tall and 3 ft wide), sculpted as Lord Vishnu (front) and Mohini (back).
The temple dates back to the 11th century, built by Chola king Raja Vikrama Deva, who discovered the idol following a divine dream. He was guided to excavate where a chariot nail fell and installed a shrine at that very spot.

Significance of the Temple

Ryali means “fall” in Telugu—named for the flower from Mohini’s plait that fell here, which led Lord Shiva to recognize the divine form of Vishnu.
Opposite the Vishnu shrine is a temple for Lord Shiva as Uma Kamandaleshwara, installed by Brahma, symbolizing divine unity—a rare east-west temple alignment.
The carved idol features Vishnu’s forms along with Sridevi, Bhoodevi, Narada, Tumburu, Rambha, Urvasi, Kinnaras, Govardhana Krishna, Adisesha, Garuda, and Ganga Devi.
A naturally flowing stream—Akasha Ganga—emerges from the feet of the idol, noticeable and sacred.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple features a modest but significant structure, centering around the monolithic Salagrama idol. The overall design emphasizes spiritual symbolism over ornamentation
