Hazara Mandapa

The Hazara Rama Mandapa is part of the famed Hazara Rama Temple, nestled in the royal enclosure of Hampi, Karnataka—once the vibrant capital of the Vijayanagara Empire.

“हज़ार स्तंभों से गूंजता है एक मौन—जो समय की सदीयों को चीर कर आज भी कथा सुनाता है।”

― Hazara Mandapa

The term “Hazara Rama” translates to “a thousand Ramas,” a testament to the temple’s richly carved panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana.

Mythological Significance & History

Constructed in the early 15th century, possibly under Devaraya I and later extended during the reign of Devaraya II and Krishnadevaraya, the temple originally served as the royal family’s private chapel. Over time, the structure expanded to include a porch and mandapa.

Significance of the Temple

A unique example of royal Vaishnavite devotion, this temple illustrates the cultural and religious ethos of the Vijayanagara royal court.
Its outer walls are adorned with detailed bas-reliefs of Ramayana episodes, royal processions, and festivals like Dasara and Holi—capturing both myth and history.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple comprises a sanctum (garbhagriha), ardha-mandapa, pillared hall, and an elegant open porch added later.

A hallmark of the space is its four polished black stone (schist) pillars, each carved with deities such as Ganesha, Mahishamardini, Hanuman, and various Vishnu forms including Kalki.

The interior houses an empty pedestal with three holes, indicating that statues of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita once adorned the sanctum.

The compound wall is unique in Hampi and richly sculpted with scenes of royal processions, martial displays, and public festivities.
