The Hadimba Devi Temple—also known locally as Hidimba Devi Temple or Dhungari Temple—is a historic shrine nestled amidst the deodar forests of Manali, Himachal Pradesh, built in 1553 CE by Maharaja Bahadur Singh.

Mythological Significance & History

The Hadimba Devi Temple—also known locally as Hidimba Devi Temple or Dhungari Temple—is a historic shrine nestled amidst the deodar forests of Manali, Himachal Pradesh, built in 1553 CE by Maharaja Bahadur Singh. It enshrines a cave over a rock where Hidimba Devi (wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata) is believed to have meditated.According to legend, Bhima defeated Hidimba’s brother Hidimb, married the demoness Hidimba, and she later became a protective local goddess after her time in meditation here.

Significance of the Temple

Hidimba Devi is deeply revered by locals—especially during Navratri, when she is worshiped with special fervor. The Dhungari Mela, held in spring, draws devotees and tourists alike with cultural festivities.

Architecture of the Temple

Distinct Design: The temple is an architectural gem, built in a traditional pagoda style. It features a four-tiered wooden roof—three timber-tiled flat tiers topped with a metallic, conical shikhara—and stands about 24 meters tall.

Materials & Decor: Constructed primarily using local wood (cedar) and stone, its base is whitewashed stone, while wooden doors are intricately carved with scenes of Durga, animals, dancers, Navagrahas, and mythology motifs.

Sanctum: There is no traditional idol—instead, devotees venerate the rock with carved footprints of Hadimba Devi, believed to be her meditation spot. A small brass image (~3 inches) also complements the sanctum.

Nearby Shrine: A small shrine dedicated to her son Ghatotkacha is located about 70 meters away.

How to Reach to Temple

By Road: Located just 2 km from Manali’s Mall Road, it’s an easy walk, or accessible by auto, taxi, or local bus.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali Airport), around 50–52 km away .

By Train: The closest broad-gauge station is Joginder Nagar, about 145–165 km away; local transport is available to Manali.
