Mythological Significance & History

The Garjiya Devi Temple is believed to have been established in the 19th century, though its roots are considered much older by the locals. According to legend, the idol of Garjiya Devi emerged from the river and was placed atop a large rock in the middle of the Kosi River. The temple was later built around this sacred idol. The Katyuri kings of Kumaon are believed to have worshipped here, and it has remained a culturally significant site for centuries.
