Devi Talab Mandir

Durgiana Temple

Durgiana Mandir is a prominent Hindu temple in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab, situated near Hathi Gate and Goal Bagh, just about 700 m from Amritsar Railway Station and 1–1.5 km from the bus stand.

“दुर्गियाना मंदिर की हर घंटी में गूंजती है माँ की करुणा और विष्णु की कृपा।”

―Durgiana Temple

Though dedicated to Goddess Durga, it also houses idols of Lakshmi, Vishnu, Shiva, and Hanuman.

History of the Temple

Originally built in the 16th century, the temple was rebuilt in 1921 by Guru Harshai Mal Kapoor, with its foundation stone laid by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya.

The site is associated with the Ramayana legend where Lava and Kusha tied Hanuman at a tree in the courtyard after capturing the Ashvamedha horse. The land is also believed to have been used by King Ikshvaku for yajnas (sacrificial rituals).

Architecture of the Temple

Designed with architectural similarity to the Golden Temple, it is built in the middle of a sacred sarovar (pond) measuring approximately 160 m × 130 m, and accessed using a white marble bridge.

The gold-plated central dome, marble façade, and massive silver-engraved entrance doors (12 × 12 ft) earn it the name “Silver Temple”.

Inside are shrines of Lakshmi–Narayan, Ram Darbar, Radha–Krishna, and various smaller temples including Sitla Mata, Bada Hanuman, and Tulsidas Mandir which houses a handwritten Ramayana.

Religious Significance

A revered Lakshmi-Narayan temple and Durga Tirath, where devotees worship both Shakti (Durga) and Vaishnav deities (Lakshmi-Vishnu.

Hosts the famous Langoor Mela during Navratri and Dussehra—children dress as langurs and offer prayers at the Bada Hanuman Temple, part of the complex.

The temple also holds significance during Sawan celebrations, with newlywed couples worshipping Radha–Krishna.
