Deo Sun Temple

Deo Sun Temple

The Deo Sun Temple, also known as Deo Surya Mandir, is one of the most revered and ancient temples dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God), located in Deo town, Aurangabad district, Bihar, India.

“देव सूर्य मंदिर, श्रद्धा और स्थापत्य कला का अद्भुत संगम है।”

― Deo Sun Temple

What makes this temple unique is that unlike most sun temples which face the east (rising sun), the Deo Sun Temple is west-facing, symbolically honoring the setting sun, which is a rare architectural and spiritual feature.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to have been built around the 8th to 12th century CE, possibly by the Chandravanshi King Bhairavendra Singh, who is also credited in a 15th-century inscription.
According to legends, the original temple was constructed by Vishwakarma (the divine architect) in a single night.
During Islamic invasions in the medieval period, it is believed that the temple was desecrated and later restored by Hindu rulers.
Some historians suggest that the temple may have originally been a Buddhist monastery or structure, later converted into a Sun temple.
A fascinating local legend says that when invaders tried to destroy the temple, the deity miraculously turned the face of the temple towards the west overnight.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is a major pilgrimage site, especially during Chhath Puja, when thousands of devotees gather to offer Arghya (water offering) to the rising and setting sun.
Nearby Surya Kund and Rudra Kund are sacred water tanks where devotees take ritual baths, believed to cure skin diseases and bring blessings.
It is one of the few temples where the setting sun is worshipped, making it spiritually distinctive.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases a blend of Nagara, Dravidian, and Vesara architectural styles.

Its shikhara (tower) is pyramid-shaped and nearly 100 feet tall, topped with a golden urn (kalash).

Constructed using large stone blocks without the use of cement, the stones are fastened using iron clamps, showcasing advanced ancient engineering.

Inside the sanctum, the current deities include Sun God, Vishnu, and a form of Avalokiteshvara, though the original idols are now preserved in the front hall due to historical damage.
