Chintamani Ganpati Temple

Chintamani Ganpati Temple is one of the Ashtavinayak Temples of Maharashtra and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

“जो श्रद्धा से चिंतामणि गणपति को स्मरण करता है, उसकी सारी चिंताएं दूर हो जाती हैं।”

― Chintamani Ganpati Temple

Located in Theur, near Pune, this temple is a sacred pilgrimage site and draws thousands of devotees every year who seek relief from worries (“chinta”) and desire mental peace.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple has its roots in ancient mythology and is associated with a story from the Puranas.
According to legend, King Abhijat and sage Kapila once worshipped Lord Ganesha here.
The demon Gana stole the sacred gem (“Chintamani”) from Kapila, and Lord Ganesha restored it. The sage then requested Ganesha to stay at this place and bless devotees.
The present temple was renovated during the Peshwa period (18th century). In fact, Peshwa Madhavrao I was a devotee and spent his last days here.

Significance of the Temple

The name “Chintamani” is derived from the divine jewel that removes worries — symbolizing Ganesha as the remover of anxiety and stress.
It is the 5th temple to be visited in the Ashtavinayak Yatra, though traditionally worshippers start from Moreshwar and end at Chintamani again.
Devotees come here to seek peace of mind, success in new beginnings, and removal of obstacles.
It is believed that worshipping Chintamani Ganpati brings clarity, calmness, and contentment.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple has a classic Peshwa-era architectural style, featuring a stone shikhara (spire), carved wooden doors, and an open courtyard.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is east-facing, with trunk turned to the left — considered very auspicious.

The idol is studded with precious stones and is seated on a lotus posture with His consorts Riddhi and Siddhi.

The temple is situated on the banks of the Mula-Mutha river, enhancing its serenity.
