Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva shrines in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. It is also considered a Shaktipeeth, where a part of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen.
“भूतेश्वर के चरणों में जो झुका, उसका जीवन शिवमय हो गया।”
― Bhuteshwar Temple
Devotees believe it serves as the guardian deity (protector) of the city.
Mythological Significance & History
The temple’s roots trace back to the Treta Yuga, when Lord Shatrughna is said to have worshipped Bhuteshwar before defeating Lavanasura and founding Mathura.
It is believed that without Shiva’s blessings, Mathura’s foundation would not have been possible.
Significance of the Temple
Regarded as the protector (Kotwal) of Mathura, Bhuteshwar Shiva is thought to guard the city from evil forces.
The temple draws large crowds during Shravan Mondays and Maha Shivaratri, when devotees seek protection and blessings.
The site is a significant Shaktipeeth, enhancing its spiritual importance.
Architecture of the Temple
The inner sanctum spans approximately 100 m², featuring a distinct conduit system that allows devotees to perform abhisheka (ritual pouring) directly from outside.
Smaller Shiva lingas near the entrance enable worshippers to perform personal rituals independently.
