Bheemakali Temple

The Bheemakali Temple is a renowned Hindu temple located in Sarahan, Himachal Pradesh. It is dedicated to Goddess Bheemakali, an incarnation of Goddess Durga.

“भीमाकाली माँ के चरणों में जो शीश झुकाता है, उसके जीवन से भय, भ्रम और बाधाएँ दूर हो जाती हैं।”

― Bheemakali Temple

This ancient temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the ear of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. Nestled amidst snow-clad mountains and dense deodar forests, the temple is a spiritual haven and an architectural marvel.

Mythological Significance & History

The Bheemakali Temple is believed to be around 800 years old. It was originally the temple of the rulers of the Bushahr dynasty, who considered Goddess Bheemakali as their kuldevi (family deity). The temple’s mythological significance dates back to the legend of Daksha Yagna and Sati’s sacrifice, making it a sacred Shakti Peetha. The present temple structure is thought to have been built after a powerful earthquake in the early 20th century that damaged the older one.

Significance of the Temple

It is a Shakti Peetha, believed to be the place where Sati’s ear fell.
The temple is an important pilgrimage site for devotees of Shakti (Devi worshippers).
Goddess Bheemakali is worshipped here as the Supreme Power, and many believe that wishes made with devotion are fulfilled.
The temple also holds importance for Tantric rituals and Navratri celebrations.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases a unique blend of Hindu and Tibetan architectural styles.

Built in the Kath-Kuni style (wood and stone), it features intricate wooden carvings, layered roofs, and earthquake-resistant design.

The complex has two towers: the older one (rarely opened) and the newer one, where the deity is worshipped today.

Idols of Goddess Bheemakali, Lord Raghunathji, and other deities are installed in the temple.
