Unlike most Hindu temples, alcohol is offered as prasad here, which makes it unique. Devotees believe that visiting Bhairon Mandir after paying respects at the Kalkaji Temple or Hanuman Mandir completes their spiritual journey.

Mythological Significance & History

The origins of Bhairon Mandir are traced back to the Mahabharata era. It is believed that the Pandavas built this temple after the Kurukshetra war, as Lord Bhairav was considered the guardian deity of Indraprastha (ancient Delhi). According to legend, Lord Bhairav is also the protector of the city and blesses those who visit him with courage, protection, and freedom from evil forces.

Significance of the Temple

Lord Bhairav is worshipped as the protector and destroyer of evil.
Devotees believe visiting the temple on Sundays and Ashtami is especially auspicious.
Offering alcohol as prasad is symbolic of surrendering one’s ego and desires to the deity.
It is believed that those who visit this temple after visiting Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place have their wishes fulfilled.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows traditional North Indian Nagara-style architecture, with a simple yet powerful presence. The sanctum houses the idol of Lord Bhairav in a fierce form, adorned with garlands, tilak, and sacred ash. The temple’s inner walls depict mythological scenes related to Lord Shiva and Bhairav. Despite its modest size, the temple holds deep spiritual energy and a historical ambiance.
