It is one of the prominent 51 Shakti Peethas, making it a highly significant pilgrimage spot for devotees of both Shiva and Shakti.

Mythological Significance & History

The name Bakreswar comes from “Bakra” meaning “bent” and “Ishwar” meaning “God”, referring to a legend where Lord Shiva took a crooked (bent) form to calm Sage Ashtavakra’s anger. The area has strong mythological and tantric significance.
