Augharnath Temple

Augharnath Temple

Augharnath Temple, also popularly known as Kali Paltan Mandir, is a sacred Hindu temple located in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and holds immense religious as well as historical significance. This temple is one of the oldest in the city and is closely associated with India’s First War of Independence in 1857.

ॐ श्री बंके बिहारी लाल की जय॥
Om Shri Bankey Bihari Laal Ki Jai!
राधे राधे जय श्री राधे॥
Radhe Radhe Jai Shri Radhe

― Bankey Bihari Temple

It is believed that Lord Shiva manifested here in his Aghori form, and the temple’s name is derived from the Aghori Nath sect of sadhus. Today, it stands as a symbol of faith, freedom, and revolution, attracting both devotees and patriots alike.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple gained national attention due to its role in the 1857 revolt. It is said that Indian soldiers (sepoys) from the nearby British cantonment (Kali Paltan) used to secretly meet here and planned the uprising against the British.
Hence, the temple came to be known as “Kali Paltan Mandir” because the British referred to Indian sepoys as the black regiment (Kali Paltan). The temple has since been renovated and expanded but retains its powerful association with India’s freedom struggle.

Significance of the Temple

A rare blend of spiritual and nationalist heritage – devotees come to worship Lord Shiva, while historians visit to honor the memory of freedom fighters.
A powerful spiritual site for devotees of Shaivism, especially during Maha Shivratri, Shravan month, and Mondays.
A symbol of India’s resistance movement, commemorated by a martyrs’ memorial inside the temple complex.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple structure showcases a blend of modern and traditional North Indian styles, with a large Shiva Lingam as the central deity.

The temple has a tall shikhar (spire), beautifully sculpted pillars, and serene surroundings.

A museum and martyrs’ gallery are also part of the complex, displaying artifacts from the 1857 rebellion.

The temple premises include Dhuni (sacred fire) and accommodations for visiting sadhus and pilgrims..
