Ananta Vasudeva Temple

The Ananta Vasudeva Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, located in the heart of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This is the only major temple in Bhubaneswar dedicated to Vishnu, as most others are dedicated to Lord Shiva.

“जहाँ अनंत वासुदेव की भक्ति है, वहाँ जीवन के बंधन स्वयं टूट जाते हैं।”

― Ananta Vasudeva Temple

The presiding deity is worshipped here in his Ananta Vasudeva form along with his siblings Balabhadra (Balarama) and Subhadra, making it one of the few Vaishnavite temples in a primarily Shaivite region.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was constructed in the 13th century, around 1278 AD, by Queen Chandrika, the daughter of the Eastern Ganga ruler Anangabhima Deva III. It was built during a period when the Ganga dynasty was known for its devotion to both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This temple stands as a testimony to the religious harmony and architectural brilliance of that era.

Significance of the Temple

It is a major pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites in Odisha.
The temple symbolizes the coexistence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism in Bhubaneswar.
The rituals and prasad offerings here are similar to those of the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
Unlike most temples in Bhubaneswar which are Shiva temples, Ananta Vasudeva Temple uniquely honors Lord Krishna.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows the Kalinga style of architecture, similar to the famous Lingaraja Temple.

It has a Vimana (sanctum tower), Jagamohana (assembly hall), Natamandira (dance hall), and Bhoga Mandapa (offering hall).

Beautiful stone carvings of deities, floral motifs, and epic scenes adorn the temple walls.

Inside the sanctum, the idols of Krishna (Vasudeva), Balarama, and Subhadra are uniquely sculpted from black granite.
