Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar is one of the most magnificent Hindu temples in India, dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan (1781–1830). It was built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and inaugurated in 1992. Mythological Significance & History

The temple was envisioned and created under the guidance of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Lord Swaminarayan.
Construction began in the late 20th century, and the temple was inaugurated on 2nd November 1992.
Built entirely from pink sandstone, the temple was designed without the use of steel to ensure its longevity and natural beauty.
The temple gained worldwide attention after surviving a terrorist attack in 2002, showcasing its spiritual resilience and importance.

Significance of the Temple

It is considered the heart of Swaminarayan faith in Gujarat.
The temple spreads the message of peace, purity, and devotion, encouraging visitors to live with higher values and harmony.
It is a center for cultural and spiritual education, hosting exhibitions on Indian traditions, history, and spirituality.

Architecture of the Temple

The main monument is 108 feet high, 240 feet long, and 131 feet wide, built entirely from pink sandstone from Rajasthan.

The central shrine houses the idol of Lord Swaminarayan (7 feet tall), seated in Abhayamudra posture, richly decorated with ornaments.

The temple is adorned with intricate carvings of deities, saints, animals, dancers, and musicians, reflecting Indian cultural themes.

The complex features:

  • Exhibition halls with audio-visual shows and dioramas depicting Indian culture and Swaminarayan’s life.
  • Sahajanand Van – a lush garden with fountains, sculptures, and a cultural boat ride.
  • Sat-Chit-Anand Water Show – a stunning multimedia presentation based on Vedic stories.

The temple combines traditional craftsmanship and modern presentation techniques, making it a unique spiritual landmark.

By Road: The temple is located about 4 km from Gandhinagar city center and 25 km from Ahmedabad. It is well connected by bus, cab, and private vehicles.
