Vaitheeswaran Koil – Mars (Mangal)

Vaitheeswaran Koil (also spelled Vaitheeswarankovil) is a famous Shiva temple in Tamil Nadu, located near Mayiladuthurai (in Nagapattinam / Mayiladuthurai district).

“मंगल दोष से पीड़ित मनुष्य को वैथीश्वरन कोविल में शिव की शरण ही राहत देती है।”

― Vaitheeswaran Koil – Mars (Mangal)

Shiva is worshipped here as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran — “The Divine Healer” (Vaidya = doctor, Ishvara = lord).

Mythological Significance & History

The temple has ancient origins, with key contributions during the Chola period, especially under Kulothunga Chola I (11‑12th century CE).
Later it also saw renovations / additions under Pandya, Nayak, and Maratha kings.
Inscriptions in various parts of the temple (on steps, prakarams, halls) trace its development over centuries.
There is a legend: Angaraka (Mars) was afflicted with leprosy (or a skin disease / ailment), and he prayed to Lord Shiva at this temple. Shiva cured him. Because of this, Mars is believed to reside here in this temple (i.e. this temple is his abode in the Navagraha circuit).

Significance of the Temple

Major attraction: Healing. Especially for skin diseases, chronic illnesses, and for those afflicted by Mars Dosha. Devotees believe that rituals here and sacred water etc. bring cures.
Navagraha relief: Because this is the Mars temple, people with Mars in unfavorable positions in their horoscope come here to perform “parihara” rituals (remedy rituals) to lessen the negative influence.
Sacred tank: Siddhamirtham Theertham (tank) inside the temple complex is believed to have healing waters. A dip is believed to cure diseases.
Shrines: Apart from main deity, there are shrines for Thaiyal Nayagi (his consort), Dhanvantari (medicine god), Subramanya (Murugan), as well as for Angaraka / Mars itself.
Cultural / spiritual importance: It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam (temple praised in early Tamil Saivite canonical hymns by Nayanars) which increases its sanctity.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in Dravidian style.

It has a five‑tiered main gopuram (rajagopuram) plus two inner gopurams. Large precincts (prakarams).

The main shrine (garbhagriha) holds the self‑manifested Shiva Lingam facing west, which is somewhat unusual (many temples have deities facing east).

There is a shrine of Thaiyal Nayagi (the consort goddess) in the second precinct.

Neem (margosa) tree (Sthala Vriksha) inside temple grounds, believed to have medicinal properties.

Temple has multiple mandapams (pillared halls), sculpture work, metal images of deities such as Nataraja, Angaraka etc. is also considered sacred and medicinal.
