Mythological Significance & History

The temple was originally built around 625 CE by Chalukya King Pulakeshin II to commemorate his victory over the Vengi region.
Later, the Kakatiya dynasty regarded Goddess Bhadrakali as their kula-devatha (family deity) and enhanced the site by constructing the adjoining lake.
The temple fell into neglect after invasions but was revived in the 1950s by devotees like Sri Ganapathi Sastri and other locals. Renovations continued into the early 2000s, adding new structures like the Alaya Shikaram and Maha Mantapam, plus inscriptions and a Chandi Yantra.
Intriguingly, local legend links the temple with the Koh-i-Noor diamond, originally embedded in the goddess’s left eye, later taken by invaders.
