― Murudeshwar Temple

Its name traces back to the Atma-Linga episode involving Ravana—legend says that the cloth covering the divine lingam landed here, giving rise to the name “Mrideshwar,” later Murudeshwar.

Mythological Significance & History

Rooted in the Treta Yuga and Ramayana legends, Lord Shiva granted the Atma‑Linga to Ravana with a condition that allowed its drop causing spiritual ripples across the region. The site’s significance deepens as part of Shiva’s Pancha Kshetras worshipped across Karnataka.

Significance of the Temple

The primary deity here—the Sri Mridesa Linga—is believed to be a fragment of the original Atma‑Linga and remains embedded in the ground, visible only near the sanctum entrance. Devotees view it amidst softly glowing oil lamp light.
The temple is also celebrated as one of Shiva’s five sacred locations (Pancha Kshetras) in Karnataka

Architecture of the Temple

123-foot Shiva statue: One of the world’s tallest seated Shiva idols, carved by sculptors led by Kashinath of Shivamogga over two years; it gleams under sunlight

20‑storey Raja Gopura (Temple Tower): Stands ~237–249 feet tall, with a lift allowing panoramic views of the statue and ocean..

The temple complex includes inscriptions and sculptures from epics, such as Ravana’s encounter with Ganesha, Arjuna receiving the Gita, the Sun Chariot, and descent of Ganga, alongside a Rameshwara Linga, a Shaneswara shrine, and guardian elephant statues
