Kankali Devi Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Tigawa village, near Katni district of Madhya Pradesh. It is dedicated to Goddess Kankali (a form of Durga) and is one of the earliest surviving examples of Hindu temple architecture in central India

The temple dates back to the 5th century CE, during the rule of the Gupta dynasty, which is often called the “Golden Age of India.” Archaeological evidence and inscriptions suggest that the temple was built as a shrine dedicated to Goddess Kankali, a fierce form of the Divine Mother.
The site of Tigawa is famous for its group of ancient temples, but Kankali Devi Temple is the most well-preserved among them. Over centuries, the temple has survived natural decay and invasions, standing as a testimony to early Indian temple architecture.

The temple is built in Gupta period Nagara style architecture.

It consists of a simple square sanctum (garbhagriha) with a flat roof, unlike the later temples that had towering shikharas.

The doorway and walls are decorated with intricate carvings of deities, floral motifs, and geometric patterns.

A stone image of Goddess Kankali (Durga) is enshrined in the sanctum, symbolizing divine feminine power.

The temple is made of stone blocks fitted together without mortar, showcasing excellent craftsmanship of the Gupta era. also important, as cremations take place here, similar to the ghats of Varanasi.
