― Hayagriva Madhava Temple

The temple is a revered pilgrimage for Hindus as well as Buddhists.

Mythological Significance & History

The present structure was rebuilt in 1583 AD by Koch King Raghudeva Narayan, though its origins trace back to much earlier—possibly the 10th–11th century under the Pala dynasty, or even earlier traditions.
The temple stands as an amalgamation of Hindu Vaishnavite devotion and Buddhist reverence, as some Buddhists believe that Lord Buddha attained nirvana at this very site.

Significance of the Temple

Enshrines a black stone idol of Lord Hayagriva Madhava, an incarnation of Vishnu associated with wisdom, knowledge, and learning.
The temple is a symbol of communal harmony, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and local tribes alike.
Major festivals celebrated here include Janmashtami, Doul Utsav (Holi), and Bihu, which attract thousands of devotees.
A large sacred pond called Madhab Pukhuri lies near the temple, enhancing its spiritual aura.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Nagara style of temple architecture with unique Assamese influences.

Structure consists of a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) housing the deity, a mandapa (pillared hall), and a shikhara (pyramidal tower).

The temple walls are richly carved with:

Beautiful rows of carved elephants at the base

Figures of Vishnu’s Dashavataras (ten incarnations)

Episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata
