Jagannath Temple, Hauz Khas

Jagannath Temple

The Jagannath Temple in Delhi, located in Hauz Khas, is a modern yet spiritually significant temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Though it is not as ancient as the Puri temple, it holds immense importance for the Odia community in Delhi and devotees from across India. The temple is famous for celebrating the annual Rath Yatra,

ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रूं ह्रैं ह्रौं ह्रः कालभैरवाय नमः

― Jagannath Temple Delhi

where beautifully decorated chariots carry the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra through the streets, attracting thousands of visitors.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built in the late 20th century by the Odia community residing in Delhi to bring the culture and devotion of Puri’s Jagannath Temple to the capital. Over the years, it has become a hub for cultural, spiritual, and community activities, especially during the Rath Yatra, which replicates the traditions of Puri on a smaller scale.

Significance of the Temple

A prominent spiritual center for devotees of Lord Jagannath in Delhi.
Hosts one of the largest Rath Yatra celebrations in North India.
Promotes Odia traditions, music, dance, and cuisine.
Considered an auspicious place for offering prayers for health, prosperity, and protection.

Architecture of the Temple

The Delhi Jagannath Temple reflects a blend of modern architecture with Odishan temple style. The temple features a tall, white-painted shikhara (spire) and intricately designed motifs inspired by Puri’s temple carvings. Inside, the sanctum houses wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, similar to Puri’s tradition. The spacious courtyard and clean surroundings make it a peaceful retreat in the busy city.
