Mythological Significance

According to Devi Purana, during the episode of Sati’s self-immolation and Shiva’s grief-driven tandava, her yoni (reproductive organ) fell on Nilachal Hill, sanctifying it as the Kamakhya Shaktipeeth.
Shakti Name: Kamakhya Devi (कामाख्या देवी) – “The Goddess of Desire”
Bhairava: Umananda / Khandakapala
Fallen Body Part: Yoni (Womb and Genitals) – symbol of Shakti’s power of creation
Kamakhya represents the creative force of the universe and is closely associated with tantra, fertility, and Shakti sadhna.

Built in Nagara-style architecture with influences of Assamese temple design

Distinct beehive-shaped shikhara topped with golden kalasha

The main sanctum (garbhagriha) does not have a murti (idol) but features a natural rock crevice shaped like a yoni, continuously bathed by an underground spring

No direct darshan of deity; devotees worship the sacred yoni stone draped in red cloth and flowers

The entire temple complex also includes 10 Mahavidya temples: Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshwari, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumavati, Kamalatmika, and Tripura Sundari.
