― Shri Nagni Mata Temple

This temple is dedicated to Nagni Mata, a serpent goddess revered for protection from snakebites and skin diseases.

History of the Temple

The temple is believed to be centuries old and deeply rooted in local folklore and tribal traditions.
One legend tells of an old man suffering from leprosy who dreamt of the goddess showing him a stream of healing milk. After applying the muddy paste from that site, he was miraculously healed. That sacred place became the site of the temple.
Another story involves a snake charmer who once captured the goddess (in serpent form). The local king intervened and had her released. This event made the site famous for removing venom and protecting from snakes.
The temple’s priestly family belongs to the Rajput lineage (Thakur Mehta family), and they have been serving the temple for over 60 generations.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows traditional Himachali hill architecture, constructed from local stone and wood.
It has a carved sanctum, an open courtyard, and a central shrine with the idol of Goddess Nagni.
A miraculous stream of water flows out from the feet of the goddess idol—despite no visible source or pipe. This is considered a divine mystery by the devotees.

Religious Significance

Devotees believe that Nagni Mata protects against snake bites, poisons, and skin diseases.

The holy clay (called “shakkar”) from the temple is taken by devotees and applied on snakebite wounds and even at home entrances to keep snakes away.

A large fair, known as the Nagni Mela, is held every Saturday during the Hindu months of Shravan and Bhadrapada (usually July to September), where thousands gather for rituals and blessings.
