Mythological Significance & History

The Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as Matabari, is located on a hillock in Udaipur, Tripura—approximately 55 km from Agartala. It is one of the most sacred 51 Shakti Peethas.

Legend holds that Goddess Sati’s right big toe fell at this site, making it a revered spot.

The temple was commissioned in 1501 CE by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, following a divine dream instructing him to install the Goddess’s idol there.

Significance of the Temple

As a major Shakti Peetha, it’s intrinsic to Shaktism and draws millions seeking spiritual solace and blessings.

The hillock resembles a tortoise (Kurma), earning the title Kurma Pitha, symbolizing cosmic stability.

Each year, a massive Diwali fair (Mela) draws over 200,000 devotees for festive darshan and celebrations.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple exhibits the Bengali Ek‑ratna style, characterized by a square sanctum topped with a conical dome.

The structure stands roughly 24 sq ft at the base and 75 ft high.

Inside, two stone idols are worshipped: the larger (~5 ft) of Goddess Tripura Sundari, and a smaller (~2 ft) known as Chhoto‑Ma, believed to have accompanied kings in battle.

Nearby, the Kalyan Sagar Lake—home to revered tortoises and fish—adds to the temple’s tranquil ambiance and spiritual charm.
