Mythological Significance & History

The temple has a rich mythological background. According to legend, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Venkateswara to answer the prayers of devotees seeking liberation in Kali Yuga. The temple finds mention in ancient scriptures such as the Varaha Purana, Padma Purana, and Venkatachala Mahatmyam.
Historically, the temple was patronized by several dynasties including the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagara kings. King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara made significant contributions to the temple in the 16th century, donating gold and jewels.

Significance of the Temple

Considered one of the most sacred Maha Shakti Peethas in India.
The presiding deity Puruhutika Devi is believed to bless devotees with courage, prosperity, and protection from obstacles.
Devotees throng during Navratri and Shakti Pujas, making it a hub of spiritual energy.
As it is within the Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple, devotees can worship both Lord Shiva (as Kukkuteswara) and Shakti (as Puruhutika Devi) at the same place.
It is a major Godavari Tir pilgrimage spot, attracting thousands of devotees throughout the year

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple is a masterpiece of South Indian temple design.

The Gopuram (tower) and Vimana (dome) are richly decorated with gold plating.

The Ananda Nilayam sanctum houses the awe-inspiring idol of Lord Venkateswara, which is about 8 feet tall and adorned with precious jewels.
