Thingalur Temple – Moon (Chandra)

Thingalur Temple – Moon (Chandra)

The temple is called Kailasanathar Temple (also known as Chandiran Temple or Chandiranaar Temple) in the village of Thingalur in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India.

“चंद्र देव मन की शांति और भावनाओं के स्वामी हैं, उनकी कृपा से जीवन में संतुलन आता है।”

― Thingalur Temple

he main deity or presiding power is Lord Shiva in the form Kailasanathar, with his consort Periya Nayagi Amman. There is also a separate shrine for Chandra (Moon).

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is very ancient, believed to have been constructed by Pallava king Rajasimma in the 7th century CE, making it about 1400‑1500 years old. The present masonry structure, including additions/renovations, are from later periods, particularly the Nayak period (around 16th century).
The village Thingalur is mentioned in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical literature called Tevaram, by the saint poets (Nayanars).

Significance of the Temple

Because it is a Navagraha sthalam for Chandra (Moon), people come here to offer prayers when the Moon is believed to have unfavorable astrological influence (“Chandra dosha”) — for mental peace, family harmony, curing ailments associated with mind, nerves, etc.
Also known for the ritual called Anna Prasanna / Annaprasana (first feeding of cooked rice to infant children), where rice is fed to babies in the temple to receive blessings.
Unique astronomical/astrological architecture: During certain Tamil months (Puratasi in September‑October, and Panguni in March‑April), the moon’s rays (or moonlight) fall directly on the Shiva Lingam in the shrine.
The temple is revered in Saivite tradition, due to legends like the devotee Appoodi Adigal whose devotion to Saint Tirunavukkarasar and Lord Shiva features in this temple.

Architecture of the Temple

Style: Dravidian temple architecture.

Structure: A Rajagopuram (temple tower) of several tiers (three‑tiered or five‑tiered per different sources) at the entrance. The temple has closed precincts (prakarams).

Sanctum (garbhagriha) houses a Shiva Lingam made of black granite with 16 sides.

There is a separate shrine for Chandra (Moon), whose idol is also made of black granite and is usually clad or decorated in white cloth, symbolic of the moon.

Temple tank called Chandra Pushkarani or Chandra Theertham is present.
