According to sacred texts, this is the place where the Goddess Sati’s right hand (or cheek, in some versions) is said to have fallen. The presiding goddess is worshipped as Narayani, and the accompanying form of Lord Shiva (Bhairava) is known as Sanghar (or Samhara Bhairava).

Architecture of the Temple

The temple architecture reflects the classic South Indian Dravidian style, with:
- Towering gopurams (gateway towers) intricately carved with celestial beings and mythological figures
- An inner sanctum (garbhagriha) housing Maa Narayani, adorned with garlands, flowers, and sacred lamps
- A shrine for Bhairava Sanghar and other accompanying deities
- A holy tank and pillared halls for prayers and rituals
Notably, Shuchindram is also home to the Thanumalayan Temple, known for the Trinity idol (Shiva-Vishnu-Brahma), which is rare and significant.
