Shri Bhramaramba Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Bhramaramba Devi Shaktipeeth Temple

Shri Bhramaramba Devi Shaktipeeth Temple is one of the Ashta Dasha (18) Maha Shaktipeethas and also one of the 51 Shaktipeethas mentioned in sacred Hindu scriptures. It is located within the premises of the famous Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. This sacred site is unique and immensely powerful because it is one of the few places where both a Jyotirlinga (Shiva) and a Shaktipeeth (Shakti) exist together.

ॐ नमः शिवाय
This mantra is a salutation to Lord Shiva, the deity enshrined in the cave. “

― Shri Bhramaramba Devi Temple

Here, Goddess Sati is worshipped as Bhramaramba Devi, and her consort Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna Swamy, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

History of the Temple

The legend of this temple is deeply rooted in the Daksha Yagna and the origin of Shaktipeethas. According to the Puranas, when Goddess Sati sacrificed herself at her father Daksha’s Yagna, Lord Shiva carried her corpse in grief. As her body disintegrated, the upper part of her back (or neck) is believed to have fallen at this location, sanctifying the site as a Shaktipeeth.
The site was later associated with another powerful legend: when the demon Arunasura terrorized the world, Goddess Parvati incarnated as Bhramaramba (the goddess of black bees) and sent a swarm of divine bees to destroy him. Hence, the name “Bhramaramba”—Bhramara meaning bee.

Significance of the Temple

The temple holds twin spiritual significance:
It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (Mallikarjuna Swamy)
It is one of the 18 Maha Shaktipeethas (Bhramaramba Devi)
This makes it one of the most powerful pilgrimage sites in India, especially for devotees of both Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. Key spiritual beliefs include:
Visiting here is said to grant liberation (moksha)
Devotees believe that worshipping both Shiva and Shakti here balances both masculine and feminine energies
It is believed to remove sins, obstacles, and negative energies from one’s life

Architecture of the Temple

The Bhramaramba Devi Temple is located within the larger Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple complex and follows classical South Indian (Dravidian) architecture. Key features include:

  • Magnificent gopurams (towers) adorned with carvings of deities and celestial beings
  • A beautifully adorned sanctum (garbhagriha) where Bhramaramba Devi is enshrined
  • Richly carved pillars and mandapas
  • The temple walls depict mythological stories, especially of Devi’s forms and Shiva’s cosmic acts

The temple sits atop the Nallamala Hills, surrounded by lush forests and the Krishna River, adding natural divinity to its spiritual essence.
