The temple is part of the famous Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple complex, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kukkuteswara (the form of a cock).

Mythological Significance & History

The temple has ancient origins and finds mention in Devi Bhagavata Purana and other sacred texts.
According to legend, when Sati Devi immolated herself in the Yagna of Daksha, Lord Shiva carried her body across the universe. During this event, her left hand fell at Pithapuram, making this place a Shakti Peetha.
The name Puruhutika is associated with Indra (Puruhuta), as he is believed to have worshipped Goddess Shakti here to gain victory over demons.
The temple has been an important seat of Shaktism for centuries and was patronized by several kings of the region.
