Narayan Suktam – Praise of the Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa

Nārāyaṇa sūktam (नारायणसूक्तम्)

ॐ स॒ह ना॑ववतु। स॒ह नौ॑ भुनक्तु। स॒ह वी॒र्यं॑ करवावहै।
ते॒ज॒स्विना॒वधी॑तमस्तु॒मा वि॑द्विषा॒वहै᳚ ॥
ॐ शान्तिः॒शान्तिः॒शान्तिः॑ ॥

“Om, may He (the Divine) protect us both,
May He nourish us both,
May we work together with great energy,
May our study be enlightening and not give rise to hostility.
Om, peace, peace, peace.”

ॐ, वह (ईश्वर) हम दोनों की रक्षा करे,
वह हम दोनों का पालन-पोषण करे,
हम दोनों मिलकर परिश्रम से कार्य करें,
हमारा अध्ययन तेजस्वी हो और आपसी द्वेष न उत्पन्न करे।
ॐ, शान्ति, शान्ति, शान्ति।”

ॐ स॒ह॒स्र॒शीर्॑षं दे॒वं॒वि॒श्वाक्षं॑ वि॒श्वश॑म्भुवं ।
विश्वं॑ ना॒राय॑णं दे॒व॒म॒क्षरं॑ पर॒मं प॒दम् ।
वि॒श्वतः॒पर॑मान्नि॒त्यं॒वि॒श्वं ना॑राय॒णꣳ ह॑रिम् ।
विश्व॑मे॒वेदं पुरु॑ष॒स्तद्वि॒श्वमुप॑जीवति ।
पतिं॒विश्व॑स्या॒त्मेश्व॑र॒ शाश्व॑त शि॒वम॑च्युतम् ।

The Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa, who has countless heads and forms, sees all and is the source of all well-being. The entire universe is Nārāyaṇa Himself, the imperishable and supreme state. He is eternal, existing beyond all things, sustaining and pervading everything as Hari. This entire creation is the Cosmic Being (Puruṣa), and all beings live through Him. He is the eternal Lord of the universe, the inner Self of all, ever-auspicious, changeless, and beyond decay.

परमेश्वर नारायण, जिनके असंख्य सिर और रूप हैं, वे सर्वदर्शी हैं और समस्त जगत के कल्याणकर्ता हैं। सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्मांड स्वयं नारायण ही हैं, जो अक्षर (अविनाशी) और परम पद हैं। वे शाश्वत हैं, सबके पार और परे विद्यमान हैं, और हरि स्वरूप में सबको धारण करते हैं। यह सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि पुरुष (नारायण) ही है और समस्त प्राणी उन्हीं से जीवन प्राप्त करते हैं। वे इस ब्रह्मांड के शाश्वत स्वामी, सभी आत्माओं के ईश्वर, सदा मंगलकारी, अच्युत और अविनाशी हैं।

ना॒राय॒णं म॑हाज्ञे॒यं॒वि॒श्वात्मा॑नं प॒राय॑णम् ।
ना॒राय॒णप॑रोज्यो॒ति॒रा॒त्मा ना॑राय॒णः प॑रः ।
ना॒राय॒ण प॑रं ब्र॒ह्म॒त॒त्त्वं ना॑राय॒णः प॑रः ।
ना॒राय॒णप॑रोध्या॒ता॒ध्या॒नं ना॑राय॒णः प॑रः ।
यच्च॑ कि॒ञ्चिज्ज॑गत्स॒र्वं॒दृ॒श्यते᳚ श्रूय॒तेऽपि॑ वा ॥
अन्त॑र्ब॒हिश्च॑ तत्स॒र्वं॒व्या॒प्य ना॑राय॒णः स्थि॑तः ।

Nārāyaṇa is the Supreme Reality, the one to be realized through the highest knowledge. He is the Soul of the universe and the ultimate refuge. Nārāyaṇa is the supreme light; He is the supreme Self. Nārāyaṇa is the Supreme Brahman, and the highest Truth. Nārāyaṇa alone is the supreme meditator and meditation itself. Whatever is seen or heard in this entire universe, everything that exists within and beyond, is completely pervaded and established in Nārāyaṇa.

नारायण ही परम सत्य हैं, जिन्हें महान ज्ञान के द्वारा जाना जाता है। वे समस्त ब्रह्मांड के आत्मा और सबका परम आश्रय हैं। नारायण ही परम प्रकाश हैं; वही परमात्मा हैं। नारायण ही परम ब्रह्म और सर्वोच्च तत्व हैं। नारायण ही सर्वोच्च ध्यानकर्ता और ध्यान के स्वरूप हैं। इस सम्पूर्ण जगत में जो कुछ भी देखा और सुना जाता है, वह सब अंदर और बाहर से पूर्णतः नारायण द्वारा व्यापित और स्थापित है।

अन॑न्त॒मव्य॑यं क॒वि स॑मु॒द्रेऽन्तं॑ वि॒श्वश॑म्भुवम् ।
प॒द्म॒को॒श प्र॑तीका॒श॒ हृ॒दयं॑ चाप्य॒धोमु॑खम् ।
अधो॑ नि॒ष्ट्या वि॒तस्या॒न्ते॒ना॒भ्यामु॑परि॒तिष्ठ॑ति ।
ज्वा॒ल॒मा॒लाकु॑लं भा॒ति॒वि॒श्वस्या॑यत॒नं म॑हत् ।
सन्त॑त शि॒लाभि॑स्तु॒लम्ब॑त्याकोश॒सन्नि॑भम्

The Supreme Nārāyaṇa is infinite, eternal, all-knowing, and the source of the universe. He is compared to an unfathomable ocean and is the cause of all auspiciousness in creation. In the heart, which is like a lotus bud turned downward, He resides. From below the navel and extending upwards, He is firmly established. This inner seat shines like a mass of flames, being the great abode of the entire universe. It is supported by subtle nerves (nāḍīs) and appears like the bud of a lotus hanging downward.

परम नारायण अनंत, अविनाशी, सर्वज्ञ और समस्त सृष्टि के कल्याण का कारण हैं। उनका स्वरूप एक अथाह समुद्र के समान है। वे हृदय में स्थित हैं, जो उलटे कमल की कली के समान है। यह स्थान नाभि से ऊपर तक फैला हुआ और स्थिर है। यह अग्नि की ज्वालाओं के समूह के समान प्रकाशित होता है और सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्मांड का महान आश्रय है। यह सूक्ष्म नाड़ियों द्वारा समर्थित है और नीचे लटकते हुए कमल के कली सदृश प्रतीत होता है।

तस्यान्ते॑ सुषि॒र सू॒क्ष्मं तस्मि᳚न् स॒र्वं प्रति॑ष्ठितम् ।
तस्य॒मध्ये॑ म॒हान॑गग्निर्वि॒श्वार्चि॑र्वि॒श्वतो॑मुखः ।
सोऽग्र॑भु॒ग्विभ॑जन्ति॒ष्ठ॒न्नाहा॑रमज॒रः क॒विः ।
ति॒र्य॒गू॒र्ध्वम॑धश्शा॒यी॒ र॒श्मय॑स्तस्य॒सन्त॑ता ।
स॒न्ता॒पय॑ति स्वं दे॒हमापा॑दतल॒मस्त॑कः ।

At the center of that (lotus-like heart) is a subtle and minute space, within which everything is established. In its middle resides a great, all-consuming fire, whose flames spread in all directions and whose faces are everywhere. This eternal, all-knowing fire enjoys the offerings and distributes them appropriately. Its rays extend upward, downward, and sideways, spreading throughout the body. It heats and energizes the entire body from head to foot.

उस (हृदय-कमल) के भीतर एक सूक्ष्म स्थान है, जिसमें सम्पूर्ण जगत स्थित है। उसके मध्य में एक महान अग्नि है, जिसकी ज्वालाएँ चारों दिशाओं में फैलती हैं और जिसके मुख सर्वत्र हैं। यह अग्नि शाश्वत और सर्वज्ञ है, जो आहार (ऊर्जा) को ग्रहण करके उसका वितरण करती है। इसकी किरणें ऊपर, नीचे और चारों दिशाओं में फैली हुई हैं, और यह अग्नि पूरे शरीर को सिर से पाँव तक ऊष्मा और ऊर्जा प्रदान करती है।

तस्य॒मध्ये॒वह्नि॑शिखा अ॒णीयो᳚र्ध्वा व्य॒वस्थि॑तः ।
नी॒लतो॑यद॑मध्य॒स्था॒द्वि॒द्युल्ले॑खेव॒भास्व॑रा ।
नी॒वार॒शूक॑वत्त॒न्वी॒पी॒ता भा᳚स्वत्य॒णूप॑मा ।
तस्याः᳚ शिखा॒या म॑ध्येप॒रमा᳚त्मा व्य॒वस्थि॑तः ।

Within that subtle fire, at its very center, there is a tiny upward-pointing flame, delicate and steady. It shines like a fine streak of lightning set amidst a dark blue raincloud. It is as subtle and slender as the fiber inside a stalk of paddy, glowing with a golden radiance, and is incomparable in brilliance. In the very center of this flame resides the Supreme Self (Paramātman), the ultimate truth and consciousness.

उस सूक्ष्म अग्नि के भीतर, उसके मध्य में, एक छोटी सी ऊपर उठी हुई ज्योति है, जो अत्यंत कोमल और स्थिर है। वह गहरे नीले जलमय मेघ के मध्य स्थित बिजली की रेखा के समान प्रकाशमान है। वह धान के डंठल के रेशे के समान अत्यंत सूक्ष्म और स्वर्णमयी आभा से युक्त है, जिसकी चमक अद्वितीय है। इसी ज्योति के मध्य में परमात्मा स्थित हैं, जो परम सत्य और चेतना का स्वरूप हैं।

स ब्रह्म॒स शिवः॒स हरिः॒सेन्द्रः॒सोऽक्ष॑रः पर॒मः स्व॒राट् ॥
ऋ॒त स॒त्यं प॑रं ब्र॒ह्म॒पु॒रुषं॑ कृष्ण॒पिङ्ग॑लम् ।
ऊ॒र्ध्वरे॑तं वि॑रूपा॒क्षं॒वि॒श्वरू॑पाय॒वैनमो॒नमः॑ ।
ॐ ना॒रा॒य॒णाय॑ वि॒द्महे॑ वासुदे॒वाय॑ धीमहि ।
तन्नो॑ विष्णुः प्रचो॒दया᳚त् ।

That Supreme Being is Brahmā, Śiva, Hari, Indra, and is the imperishable, self-effulgent Lord. He is the supreme Truth, the eternal Brahman, the Cosmic Person (Puruṣa), who is dark in hue with reddish-brown eyes, ever-pure, and the source of all creation. He has upward-flowing energy, multifaceted vision, and manifests in infinite forms. We bow to that all-pervading Reality. We meditate upon Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Being, and contemplate upon Vāsudeva. May Lord Viṣṇu inspire and enlighten us with divine wisdom.

वह परमात्मा ही ब्रह्मा, शिव, हरि, इन्द्र हैं, वही अविनाशी और स्वयंप्रकाशित परमेश्वर हैं। वे ही परम सत्य, सनातन ब्रह्म और विश्वपुरुष हैं, जिनका वर्ण श्याम और नेत्र रक्तवर्ण लिए हुए हैं। वे शुद्ध, सर्वव्यापी और समस्त सृष्टि के मूल हैं। उनकी ऊर्जा ऊपर की ओर प्रवाहित होती है, वे अनंत रूपों में प्रकट होते हैं। हम उस सर्वव्यापक परमात्मा को नमस्कार करते हैं। हम नारायण का ध्यान करते हैं, वासुदेव का चिंतन करते हैं। भगवान विष्णु हमें दिव्य ज्ञान से प्रेरित और प्रकाशित करें।
