Mithila Shakti Peeth

The Mithila Shakti Peeth, located near Janakpur station in Darbhanga, Bihar, stands as one of the sacred Shakti Peethas—sites where body parts of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen. Here, the left shoulder (Vama Skandha) is said to have descended.

“मिथिला शक्तिपीठ — जहाँ माँ उग्रतारा की शक्ति आज भी जागृत रूप में विराजती हैं।”

― Mithila Shakti Peeth

The Goddess is worshipped as Uma Devi (Mahadevi), and her consort Lord Shiva as Mahodar, on a rocky hilltop.

Mythological Significance & History

According to Hindu mythology, after Sati immolated herself at her father Daksha’s Yagna, Lord Shiva carried her body in grief. Lord Vishnu then used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember her body into 51 pieces, which fell across the Indian subcontinent—forming the Shakti Peethas. Here, her left shoulder fell, making this temple a powerful spiritual beacon.
The temple lies in the ancient land of Mithila, famed as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, daughter of King Janak—adding Ramayana resonance to its sacredness
Devotees believe the Peeth is a source of spiritual energy, where prayers are known to be fulfilled—especially during festivals like Navratri when the temple is elaborately adorned.
