― Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla

It is the only existing structure in Goa from the Kadamba-Yadava architectural era and is revered for its historical and religious significance.

Mythological Significance & History

Built in the 12th century by the Kadamba dynasty, the Mahadev Temple has miraculously survived invasions and natural calamities over centuries. Constructed during the reign of King Jayakeshi I (circa 1150 AD), it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and reflects the religious fervor and temple architecture of the Kadamba-Yadava period.
It remained hidden in the forest for centuries and was spared from destruction by invading forces, especially during the Portuguese colonization. It was rediscovered and gained recognition for its historical importance in the 20th century.

Significance of the Temple

The Mahadev Temple holds immense spiritual and cultural value for devotees and history enthusiasts alike. It is believed that a Shivalinga housed in the inner sanctum has been worshipped continuously for over 800 years. On Mahashivaratri, hundreds of devotees gather here to offer prayers and participate in night-long worship and festivities.
The temple is also symbolic of Goa’s pre-colonial Hindu heritage and stands as a testimony to the resilience of cultural and religious traditions.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases a beautiful blend of traditional Hindu temple architecture with a dash of Portuguese influence. Key features include:

  • A tall white Deepa Stambha (lamp tower) at the entrance.
  • Domed roofs and octagonal sanctum (garbhagriha) topped with a golden kalasha.
  • A magnificent Sabha Griha (assembly hall) with seven intricately carved pillars.
  • The Nandi (bull) sculpture in front of the sanctum.
  • An elegant water tank that is believed to be the oldest part of the temple complex.

The entire structure is simplistic yet grand, representing spiritual purity and cultural harmony.
