Hangseshwari Temple

Hangseshwari Temple is a distinguished Hindu shrine dedicated to Maa Hangseshwari, a form of Adi Parashakti (Jagatjanani Kali).

“जहाँ हंसेश्वरी माँ का वास होता है, वहाँ आत्मा को शरीर से परे शांति का अनुभव होता है।”

― Hangseshwari Temple

Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River in Bansberia, it’s one of the most iconic Shakti temples in Hooghly district.

Mythological Significance & History

Foundation: The temple’s construction was initiated by Raja Nrisingha Deb Roy in 1799, following his studies of Kundalini and tantric chakras.
After his demise in 1802, the temple remained incomplete until Rani Sankari, his widow, completed it in 1814.

Significance of the Temple

Embodying Tantric principles, the temple’s architecture symbolizes the human subtle-body, with its five stories named after the internal energy channels: Bajraksha, Ira, Chitrini, Pingala, and Sushumna.
Devotees worship Goddess Hangseshwari for spiritual awakening, protection, and inner transformation. Rituals like Kalabou Puja, Sneho Puja, and Pushpanjali are regularly performed, especially during Kali Puja and Sharad Purnima.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple stands five stories tall and features 13 lotus-bud shaped ratna (spires), each representing energy points in the human body.

It follows the ratna style blended with Tantric fraught symbolism, modeled after the body’s spiritual anatomy.

The sanctum houses a 3‑ft blue neem-wood idol of the four-armed Goddess Hangseshwari seated on a lotus emanating from Shiva’s navel; a white marble Shiva linga resides on the upper floors.

Also within the complex is the Ananta Basudeba Temple (built in 1679), noted for exquisite terracotta panels illustrating scenes from the epics.

How to Reach to Temple

By Train: Take a train to Bansberia Railway Station (on the Howrah–Bandel–Katwa line). The temple is only about 5 minutes away by auto or rickshaw.

By Road: It lies approximately 48 km from Howrah/Kolkata, reachable via NH-12 by car or local buses.

By Air: The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport, Kolkata, roughly 40–45 km away.
