Gorakhnath Temple, located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is a sacred shrine dedicated to Guru Gorakhnath, a renowned yogi and saint of the Nath Sampradaya. Guru Gorakhnath is considered a great Siddha Yogi who spread the knowledge of yoga, tantra, and renunciation (sanyasa).

Mythological Significance & History

The origins of Gorakhnath Temple date back to the 11th–12th century, though the Nath tradition itself is much older. It is believed that Guru Gorakhnath meditated at this very place and spread his teachings of yoga and self-realization. The temple structure has been developed and expanded over centuries, especially in recent times under the leadership of Mahants of the Goraksha Peeth, including the present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath.
The temple also played a vital role during the Indian freedom movement and has a legacy of social reform and service.

Significance of the Temple

It is a major pilgrimage center for followers of the Nath tradition and Shaivism.
Guru Gorakhnath is believed to have attained spiritual perfection and immortality through intense yogic practices.
The temple is also known for its social and charitable activities, including free meals, education, and healthcare.
Every year, the Makar Sankranti Mela is organized on a grand scale and attracts lakhs of devotees.

Architecture of the Temple

The main temple is built in traditional North Indian style, featuring shikhars (spires) and large courtyards.

The sanctum houses the Paduka (footprints) of Guru Gorakhnath, symbolizing his eternal presence.

The temple complex includes Dhuni (sacred fire), Gaushala (cow shelter), residential quarters for saints, and meditation halls.

The entire area is beautifully maintained with gardens, water tanks, and large open spaces for gatherings.
