History of Gangotri Dham

The history of Gangotri Dham is deeply rooted in ancient mythology and spirituality. According to legend, the sacred Ganga River descended to Earth through the intense penance of King Bhagirath, who prayed to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva allowed the mighty Ganga to descend to the Earth, but in a controlled manner by capturing the river in his locks to prevent it from devastating the land. Gangotri is considered the place where the Ganga first touched the Earth, marking it as the origin of this sacred river.
The Gangotri Temple itself is ancient and has been a center of pilgrimage for centuries. It is one of the Char Dham temples and holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus. Each year, thousands of devotees travel here to seek blessings from Maa Ganga and bathe in her sacred waters, which are believed to purify the soul and cleanse one of all sins.
