“This temple is not just a place of worship — it’s a sanctuary of divine power and motherly grace.”

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s origins lack exact documentation, but tradition traces its founding to the Purohit Hansa Panda, who was directed to uncover the deity in a dream; excavations revealed the idol along with 40 bullock carts of red sindoor, prompting the construction of the temple.
Goddess Chandi is believed to be a Living Goddess, worshipped in the heart of the city with profound devotion.

Significance of the Temple

Considered Cuttack’s guardian deity, Goddess Chandi embodies strength and protection in the form of Bhuvaneshvari Mahavidya
The temple draws over 2 million devotees annually, especially during the elaborate 16-day Durga Puja and Kali Puja celebrations.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in traditional Kalinga style, the temple features a modest rekha deul (curvilinear tower) over a plain sanctum (garbhagriha), housing a four-armed icon of Chandi (holding Ankusha, Paasha, Abhaya, and Varada).

The entrance is ornate, guarded by lions atop elephants, and crowned by the dharma-chakra symbol. The structure uses local stone and includes a courtyard with smaller shrines, typical of Odia temple design.
