Kanjanur Temple – Venus (Shukra)

Kanjanur Temple – Venus (Shukra)

The temple is called Agniswarar Temple, at Kanjanur village, Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in the form Agniswarar (also called Agneeswara), and the Goddess is Karpagambal. Though Sukra is the planetary focus, there is no separate idol for Sukra – Sukra is believed to be embodied in the stomach of the Shiva deity.

“जहाँ शुक्र की कृपा हो, वहाँ प्रेम, सौंदर्य और समृद्धि का वास होता है।”

― Kanjanur Temple – Venus (Shukra)

It is one of the Navagraha Temples of Tamil Nadu, associated with Sukra (Venus).

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built during the Medieval Cholas and later renovated by rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Legends say that Agni Bhagavan (the Fire God) worshipped Lord Shiva here, which gives the temple the name “Agniswarar.”
Another story: Sage Parashara Muni was blessed here to witness Shiva’s cosmic dance (Mukti Thandavam) and the place is believed to have sacred associations with Brahma (vision of Shiva’s marriage to Parvati) etc

Significance of the Temple

For devotees, this temple is important to reduce or remove Sukra dosha (malefic effects of Venus) in their horoscope. Worship here is believed to bring wealth, beauty, harmony in relationships, good health, prosperity, and favorable outcomes.
Sukra is the planet that governs love, comfort, luxury, aesthetics, arts, marriage etc., and here devotees perform remedies / poojas especially on Fridays (day of Venus / Sukra) to seek these benefits.
The temple is also a Paadal Petra Stalam (one of the temples sung by the Tamil Saivite saints), which adds spiritual prestige.

Architecture of the Temple

Follows Dravidian architecture: five‑tiered Rajagopuram (main gateway tower), two prakarams (closed precincts).

The main sanctum houses the Shiva Lingam (Agniswarar), with consort shrine for Karpagambal. There are other sub‑shrines, including ones for Nataraja, Sivakami, etc.

The temple has a special hall or Sabha: Nataraja Sabha named Mukti Mandapam, where Shiva’s cosmic dance (Thandavam) is celebrated.

The temple tank(s): known theerthams, such as Agni Theertham etc.
