Mythological Significance & History

The origins of the temple trace back to the Chola Dynasty, particularly to the reign of Kulothunga Chola I (11th–12th century CE).
The temple has also seen contributions from the Pandyas, Nayaks, and Marathas over centuries.
It is mentioned in the Tevaram hymns (7th century), making it a revered Paadal Petra Sthalam — a site praised by the Saiva saints Thirugnanasambandar, Appar, and Sundarar.
The temple is closely linked with the epic Ramayana, as it is believed that Jatayu, the divine bird, attained salvation here.
