Dab Prabatiya Temple

Da Parbatia is an archaeological site near Tezpur in Assam, featuring remnants of a 5th–6th century Hindu temple.

“दब प्रबातिया मंदिर – जहाँ हर ईंट इतिहास की भक्ति बोलती है, और हर दीवार शिव के गौरव को दर्शाती है।”

― Dab Prabatiya Temple

A later Ahom-period Shiva temple once stood above it, though today only the richly carved stone doorframe and foundational ruins remain.

Mythological Significance & History

Gupta Origins (5th–6th century): The earliest structure belongs to the Gupta era, evident from stylistic motifs and terracotta fragments—an artistry comparable to North Indian Gupta-period temples like Bhumra and Nachha Kuthara.
Ahom Overlay: The Ahoms built a brick Shiva temple over these ancient remains. The 1897 Assam earthquake destroyed it, exposing the Gupta-period doorframe underneath.

Significance of the Temple

The stone doorframe, adorned with sculptures of the goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, exquisite foliage, and reliefs, is considered “the finest and oldest specimen of sculptural art in Assam.”Now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple draws both devotees and art historians who come to admire its craftsmanship.

Architecture of the Temple

Gupta Design Layout: Excavations uncovered the base of the sanctum (garbhagriha), a circumambulatory path (pradakshina), a colonnaded mandapa, and a front hall (mukhamandapa). A stone altar (kunda) was also found at the site.

Artistic Highlights: The door jambs feature carved divine figures and decorative bands—lotus forms, rosettes, mythical beings—while the lintel bears carvings of deities like Lakulisa, Surya, and others, all marked by Gupta-style sophistication.
